Re: Volunteer projects with Poco a Poco
Thank you very much for your very generous offer of supplying my projects with anaesthetic and needles when you have available stock. As we are usually always working in very poor areas, workin gwith mostly donated supplies, doing palliative care (surgery, some ART restorations) the two items you are offering are invaluable. The difference for these people, having a tooth extracted with or without anaesthetic (as was the experience of many we treated) is immeasurable.

As we discussed, we would be more than happy to share photographs of our project with your website. I am enclosing some photographs from our Tibet project (September 2002) in Jyekundo (also known as Yushu), at a Rokpa orphanage. In this particular project, we were asked not only to provide much needed dental and medical services (we also had a doctor on our team), but also to provide some instruction for the graduation class of Tibetan doctors. Many of these young doctors will be serving their communities which are very remote, and which do not have dentists, and hence they will be responsible for providing some palliative care. We were able to leave the clinic with a sterilizer, a chair, and a starter kit of oral surgery instruments and disposeables, for the graduating class to use, as well as for any other dentists who might volunteer to provide services for the poor.

Poco a Poca, the registered charity that usually sponsors us, has a warehouse which can be used to store supplies, if you ever need to make room in your warehouse in a hurry. All I would need to do is let Dr. Sampson know ahead of time (so that someone can be at the warehouse to receive the goods).

Thank you and HANSAmed for helping us help others. I will be in touch again when we confirm our next project.

Yours truly,
Dr. M. Anna Wang

Our time in Brazil has come and gone and we are looking forward to going back to do recalls in November of 2002. In April we saw 115 patients, 90 of them were children that had been rescued from the streets Nova Hamburgo.

Our treatment room was set up in a laundry room while our waiting and diagnosis room were out on the patio.

Thank you for your donation of anaesthetic. With the help of businesses like yours, we were able to bring Canadian style dentistry to the street kids of Brazil.

Dear Anne,
HANSAmed Limited

I would like to thank you for your invaluable contribution of anesthetic for the Medical Missin Internation (MMI) effort in Ecuador. The medical-dental mission assisted the mountain people of the Rio Bamba region during October 13-28, 2000 and was one of the most successfull missions I have attended.

We had a team of 41 people of which 7 were from Canada and 34 from the United States. There were 2 dentists, 1 sergeon, 5 physicians, 10 registered nurses and a group of helpers included my son Troy Nikolai. You also were a vital part of our team through your supply of anesthetic.

We treated about 2000 patients over the two weeks, many of whom had never seen medical-dental personnel before and live with the pain daily. The people were most grateful for the services provided. One elderly lady took my hand and kissed it after I had eliminated her pain by extracting a number of diseased teeth.

On the downside, the demand for care was so high that at one community we had to sadly turn away almost 300 people. The cruel reality of this unfortunate situation just served to reinforce how truly blessed we are by the abundance of services and material possessions we enjoy.

With MMI our services are totally self-supporting and we do not accept sponsorship. However, we do recieve where it matters the most-in our hearts.

Thank you again and may God bless you and your Company for the contribution to the welfare of the Quichias Indian people in Ecuador.

Sincerely,
Egon Nikolai, DDS, FICD
